Through the Veil – a landscape with crows
Through the Veil is 36×48 inches landscape painting with fields, lakes and hills beyond with flying ravens seen through a golden veil. This painting was originally inspired by the view from a hill over a reservoir near Forest Row. The rookery in the foreground was also in this area. However I recently reworked it and added a golden transparent glaze over much if it in order to make the greens richer and enhance the magical quality it has for me. I am a fan of corvids (rooks, crows, magpies, ravens) in general and the legends surrounding them. I often feel observed by crows when I am out walking and can almost believe the ravens flying over the rookery and through the golden veil may be Huginn and Muninn, the ravens of Odin. It is an unusual painting and the colours and golden glaze make it more so. The veil adds the idea that the birds can cross from one realm to another just like any good fairy story. It is painted on deep edge canvas, ready to hang, no frame needed.
