Spirit of Spring, 40x40x1.5 inches oil on canvas of a blue stag in a spring wood. The blue stag stands to the right looking back at us. He is forming out of the forest and the hint of bluebell and woodland flowers in and around him. He is transparent in some places and corporeal in other, hence the name spirit of spring. He was born in the forest, eats the product of it and is therefore created to a degree by it. The landscape itself is semi abstract and is mostly of the blues and greens you see in English woodland in April and May. I painted it after walking in woodland in the Sussex area and tried to capture the sheer abundance of new life I saw while walking. I love the colours and scent of bluebells and other wildflowers and the enthusiasm that nature has at that time of year. I did not see the stag but I did hear him bellowing (which was scary). Clearly I was in his forest and he was letting me know. Spring as a season fascinates me as it vibrates with an exuberant energy as every plant, insect, bird and animal goes into action. I tried to capture this feeling in this painting and am pleased with the result. The stag is there because the deer are the kings and queens of the wood. The canvas is deep edge, white edges, ready to hang, no frame needed. -

Summer Playground is a 40x40x1.4 inches large semi abstract oil on canvas of a summer meadow with wildflowers and swallows. I painted it after a walk through fields and farmland between Hartfield and Ashurstwood in Sussex on a very hot July day. There was wheat and barley and corn growing in the fields and at the edges there were a myriad of wildflowers growing. Insects were buzzing and the birds were singling and calling in the trees of the hedgerows and patches of woodland. One particular meadow had swallows flying up and down incredibly fast using the thermals which made them even faster than they usually are. They were not doing it for any obvious reason other than it was fun I think. I am happy at the way the colours on this painting merge and seem to melt together slightly as it is reminiscent of the heat of this day and has captured it well for me. I can hear the birds and the insects, smell the crops and the flowers and remember how happy it makes me feel. England in summer is fleeting and sunny days are a minority so it is good to catch them when they occur which I think I have done. The painting has white edges and is ready to hang. Emerging is a large 40x40x1.5 inches oil on canvas painting of a stag and doe in an autumn forest in art nouveau, impasto, semi abstract style. A large deer stag stands on the left in the foreground looking imperiously at us as stags do, and a doe stands behind him ready to run. Behind them is a forest of pine and birch trees with thick white light hinted at coming through the trees which halo around the deer To the right is the edge of a forest that is morphing into a curtain. I love the idea of stepping out of forests into other worlds entirely and feel that may be what is happening here. I have deliberately left it ambiguous as to what is occurring and I have abstracted the painting by being very detailed in some parts of it and leaving it alone other parts. The Ravens Quest is a 40x40 inches large original oil painting on canvas of ravens flying high above a Sussex winter landscape intent on a quest. The style is slightly playful, semi abstract with lots of interesting shapes and bright art nouveau type colours. I often walk around in fields between Forest Row, and Hartfield, in Sussex, and there is a large rookery I often pass which fascinates me and inspired this painting. Ravens, crows and birds generally are the background sound many of us hear all the time but often do not register it as we blank it out - as we do traffic noise. However I can't help wondering what these intelligent birds are saying. Another influence to this painting was a story I saw in the news recently about a girl who receives gifts from crows when she feeds them. I am sure there is more to ravens and crows than we so far know and this is why this painting has a slightly mystical, fairy story narrative to it. I don't know what the ravens quest is but I am sure they have one! This painting is dedicated to birds - my life is better for them - and their continuous background chatter and song - I hear the Elbow song 'The Birds' as I look at it :-) Painted is on deep edge canvas with white edges and is ready to hang. -

White winter Hart is a 40x40x1.5 inches large original oil painting on canvas of a white hart deer stag in a semi abstract winter landscape. The colours are muted and blurred behind the stag and there is a suggestion of snow and ice and of silver birch trees at sunset. Behind the hart (stag over 5 years old) there are trees tinged with gold and layers of fields and woodland rising up behind him. The effect is quite art nouveau and expressionist and the paint is thick and luscious. The colours range from pristine white through to yellow, gold, amethyst, turquoise, blues, reds and purple. This painting was inspired by a recent brief snowfall in Sussex near the village of Danehill which has ancient woodland paths and bridleways and rolling fields and gully's between them. This hart is a red deer but the deer I actually saw on this day were Roe deer who are often found in large herds in this area watching you from the trees. I am very pleased with the colours and the real - not real effect of this painting which is as interesting to view close up as it is from a distance. The painting is ready to hang, has white edges and is on 3D deep edge canvas so no frame is needed. -
Ice Tiger is a 40 x 40 x 1.5 inches large oil painting on canvas of a white tiger in a distant and strange land. The tiger is stalking along a branch to the left while behind her there is gauzy fantastical landscape that hints of trees and waterfalls in a jungle like landscape. It is art nouveau, contemporary expressionistic, semi-abstract in style and was made by layering many colours over one another with the final layer being white. My aim with the painting was to create a land where a tiger could be free. And because tiger survival is a precarious thing right now, I wanted the painting to be whimsical and fleeting and strange. I think I achieved this! The tiger was originally orange and quite traditionally painted but has become distorted and more abstract as I added more layers. This is big fresh painting that will fit well in clean white spaces. It is on deep edge canvas, white edges, no frame needed, ready to hang. -
Twilight Grace is a 40x40x1,5 inches large original oil painting of an art nouveau style landscape with a white owl. The landscape shows a winter forest scene with a white lake at the bottom and a white owl swooping down from the trees. She is the silent herald of twilight. I painted this in January when purple, yellow, orange and pink are often seen in the evenings as the sun is setting through the naked trees. I was trying to capture the exact moment when the last beam of sun falls through a forest which acts as a signal for owls to start hunting. I painted the barn owl very carefully as I wanted her to look pristine against the slightly odd background of winter trees and white veils that I used to try and show the transition between the day and the night. 40x40x1.5 inches Monarchs of Spring is a large original oil painting on deep edge canvas with white edges. The monarchs are two red deer, a stag and a doe, who stand in the middle of a spring meadow full of white lacy flowers. Behind them is a tantalizing view of a field seen through the trees of yellow rapeseed flowers and glimpses of this yellow can be seen in a horizontal line all through the painting behind the deer. This was done for the very good reason that I like yellow and love seeing fields full of yellow flowers in Spring and summer. This painting was originally simply a landscape that I painted in May 2018 having been on a walk near Wadhurst in East Sussex through the deer park of a stately home there. I had wanted to reflect the abundance of the wildflowers and trees in meadows all over England during my favourite month. However when I looked at the painting later I realized I needed to add two of the deer. The painting is semi abstract, slightly art nouveau in style and is painted in muted tones of greens, lilacs, yellows and white.
